I am Head of Employment Tax based in Smith Cooper’s Derby office, but I work across all the Smith Cooper offices. I support and advise clients on all areas of Employment Taxes which includes National Minimum Wage and HMRC’s CJRS Furlough Scheme. I offer clients advice on a wide range of employment tax issues, including all benefits and expenses, termination packages, HMRC inspections, dealing with National Minimum Wage issues and HMRC Inspections, implementing salary sacrifice arrangements, and construction industry tax.

I originally worked for HMRC as a PAYE compliance inspector before moving to the ‘big four’ accountancy firms, where I headed up the Midlands employment tax team. In 2014, I made the decision to move to Smith Cooper, who were already embracing specialisms. In my role now, in addition to advising large businesses, I also help the middle market business owners, who do not often receive the specialist advice they deserve!
Throughout my career, I have advised clients on a range of issues. I can help your business manage and implement effective processes to manage all areas of expenses and benefits, use PAYE settlement agreements effectively, ensure termination payments are structured effectively for PAYE tax/NIC, minimize risks in relation to employment status issues and manage the IR35 Off Payroll Working rules effectively when engaging third party businesses, manage HMRC Employer Compliance and National Minimum Wage inspections, ensure all National Minimum Wage compliance risks are minimized, advise on the use of CJRS Furlough Scheme and assist with HMRC CJRS queries, and assist with Construction Industry Scheme issues. I also advise and assist clients on implementing a wide range of salary sacrifice arrangements to maximize pay for employees and give your business some payroll savings.
Using my years of experience of working within this specialist area on “both sides of the fence” for a significant number of years, I provide commercial low risk solutions for your business.
While I focus on the design and implementation of employment tax policies to reduce potential PAYE tax bills and minimize risks, I am also highly experienced in providing advice and assistance to business owners who have been picked up for an enquiry by any of the HMRCs Employer Compliance teams, National Minimum Wage teams, CJRS Furlough teams, Employment Status teams or Construction Industry Scheme teams. During the HMRC inspection, I can help to manage the process to give clients the support they need, which will reduce their risk to a significant settlement being sought and the potential impact on the wider business.
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I relax by cooking for friends and family and playing live music.
